Búðakirkja – The Eclipse
Our visit to Búðakirkja was centered around a moment we had been anticipating for years—the 2026 total solar eclipse.
The Icelandic weather was exactly as expected: cold, cloudy, and rainy. Still, we camped out beside the little black church for the entire day, holding onto the possibility that the clouds might break at just the right moment. If they had, the eclipsed sun would have fallen directly behind the steeple—a photograph we Caitlyn carefully planned and hoped to capture.
The clouds never cleared. But somehow, the experience was no less extraordinary.
As totality arrived, daylight disappeared beneath an already stormy sky. The landscape grew dark, the wildlife went completely quiet, and for a few surreal moments, everything seemed to stand still.
We may not have captured the photograph we came for, but Búðakirkja became a collection about something different—the unpredictability of nature, the beauty of simply witnessing it, and a moment we'll never forget.
