Rock Ptarmigan
Some wildlife encounters require days of searching. Others appear unexpectedly in the driveway.
The Rock Ptarmigan had been high on the list of birds Caitlyn hoped to photograph in Iceland—elusive enough that she had already begun imagining a second trip dedicated to backpacking into the landscape to find them. Instead, the morning after that conversation, an entire flock appeared just outside our cabin.
Rock Ptarmigan captures that unexpected encounter: a bird remarkably adapted to Iceland’s rugged environment, photographed not at the end of a carefully planned expedition, but through an incredible moment of chance.
Sometimes, the landscape gives you exactly what you were looking for before you ever have the chance to go searching.
